Our Academy currently consists of 4 teams with nearly 100 members members
ages 5 through 15. The teams trains two to three times per
week in the following areas: arm motions, stunts and pyramids,
jumps, tumbling (basic gymnastics) , dance, cheers and chants,
strength and conditioning and flexibility. Some of the older
members have been in the academy since 2002 and started
off as Pee Wees.
During these years, our longest running team have competed in
International Cheerleading Competitions in Bristol, Loughborough,
Reading and Nottingham, bringing home a trophy each time.
The team has completed three times at GWI’s
Street Dance Weekend. These competitions took place in Battersea
in 2002 where they placed first, the Barbican in 2004 where
they placed fifth and Hammersmith Apollo in 2006 where they
placed second. The team also performed in Saddlers Wells
after being chosen to appear at The 2006 Breaking Convention.
In addition, the team has cheered for Basketball
matches and for Boroughs in the London Youth Games—not
to mention performing in numerous local talent shows and
competitions.
The class is run by the Head
coach, assistant coach and co-assisted by the Captain
and Vice Captain who help with setting up, carrying out
smaller tasks, decision making and work closely with members
who need extra help during class. There is also a group
called the ‘Guardians’ who are the oldest
members of the squad and they help with important decisions
such as try-outs/auditions.
Team members are trained in all necessary
areas to be able to qualify and teach cheerleading if they
want to once they reach 18. Most of our current older members
are also at the level to teach in a school assisted by a
teacher. In a few more years, once they reach 17, they can
audition to be part of the British Cheerleading Associations
Youth Staff, in which they represent the BCA here and abroad
and assist senior staff with camps and workshops. The members
receive Certificates yearly to monitor their progress and
are also awarded trophies for achievements such as ‘Cheerleader
of the Year’, ‘Most improved’ and ‘100%
attendance/punctuality’.
The older members also get experience by planning
and running some of our sessions and the Captain and Vice
Captain get involved with the running and organisation of
the Squad. All members have the chance to use their creativity
to make up parts of the routines to use in competition.
With their gymnastics training, they will also be encouraged
to work towards their Assistant Gymnastics Coach qualification.
